A Day at Printera: Unveiling the Future of 3D Construction

JULY PIC2

Recently, we had the opportunity to tour Printera, a trailblazer in the realm of 3D construction. This visit was a deep dive into a revolutionary approach that’s reshaping how we think about building design and construction with CEO, Justin D’Angelo, and COO, Justin Sheinberg in Stuart, Florida.

Innovative Technology at Work

Printera is at the forefront of using 3D printing technology to construct concrete structures from construction elements, such as columns, to home design including landscape and hardscape. Their state-of-the-art printers use a specially engineered concrete mix to create structures layer by layer. Watching the printers in action was like seeing a giant, precise robotic artist at work. Technology enables not just the rapid construction of large walls, but also the creation of complex, intricate designs that would be difficult to achieve with traditional methods.

Efficiency and Sustainability

One of the most impressive aspects of Printera’s approach is its efficiency. The 3D printing process significantly reduces construction time, often completing projects in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods. This speed doesn’t come at the expense of quality; in fact, it often enhances precision. Additionally, the technology minimizes waste, contributing to a more sustainable construction practice.
During this visit, we learned about the accelerant used in concrete and tested variable accelerant rates in concrete mix to see the range that can produce testable product that is structurally sound. We also had the chance to try their unique remote control robotic arm with their computer systems needed to regulate concrete mix and accelerant delivery. We also learned how 3D printed concrete could be more than twice as strong as current home building concrete, saw how fast product can be made, and saw how concrete slabs for housing can be fabricated in warehouse for then delivery!

Looking Ahead

Visiting Printera was a glimpse into the future of construction. Their innovative use of 3D printing not only promises faster and more efficient building processes but also aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability and customization. It’s clear that as this technology evolves, it will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the construction industry.
The visit left us inspired and excited about the future. The blend of technology, sustainability, and design innovation is setting new standards and paving the way for a smarter, more adaptable built environment.
